Turf

Three lawns. Same price. Very different jobs.

All three varieties are included in the package at no extra cost. The right one comes down to how much sun the yard gets, how hard the lawn will be used, and how often you want to be mowing.

Handles shadeKids & dogs

Sir Walter buffalo

Soft underfoot and the most forgiving of the three. Copes with part shade and heavy use, which makes it the usual pick where there are kids or dogs. Broader leaf than couch, and it needs mowing less often.

SunFull sun to part shade
WearHigh
MowingEvery 2–3 weeks in season
LeafBroad, soft
Watch forSlowest to recover if it dries right out
Full sunFinest leaf

Wintergreen couch

Fine-leafed and the most manicured of the three — the carpet look. It wants full sun and regular mowing, and it will thin out under trees or against a south-facing fence.

SunFull sun only
WearHigh
MowingWeekly in season
LeafFine
Watch forGoes thin and patchy in shade
ToughestFastest to establish

Kikuyu

Hard-wearing and the quickest to knit together, so it recovers fast from wear and is the most economical to establish. It's a vigorous runner, which is both its strength and the reason it needs good edging.

SunFull sun to light shade
WearVery high
MowingWeekly in season
LeafMedium
Watch forRuns into garden beds without edging

The bit that matters more than the variety

What goes underneath.

Perth sand drains in seconds and holds almost nothing — no water, no nutrients. Roll turf straight onto it and it will yellow off in its first summer no matter which variety you picked. Every lawn we lay gets imported soil, a wetting agent and proper levelling first, and a retic system set up to reach every corner. That is what decides whether a lawn lives, not the label on the roll.
